Bavarian Holidays

Bavarian holidays offer something for everyone and for anyone thinking of a booking a European holiday the advice is forget the crowded beaches of the Mediterranean sunspots.

Instead try a holiday in Bavaria.

There is beautiful scenery, the Bavarian Alps, beautiful lakes, historical towns and one of the world’s great cities – Munich. And the Bavarian ski resorts are great for those who have a passion for winter sports.

Add annual Bavarian Festivals such as the Octoberfest in Munich and you realise there is little wonder why this part of Germany is such a wonderful place to spend a holiday.

Bavaria also has the amenities for the annual mass influx of visitors. Accommodation, whether it is hotels, guest houses, chalets, a traditional Bavarian inn or self-catering is second to none. And the transport system is first class.

Couple this with the Bavarian people’s natural hospitality and you have the perfect holiday spot.

For hikers Bavarian walking holidays offers miles and miles of trails, many in the hills and mountains. And for those who like swimming and watersports the Chiemsee is an absolute paradise.

The Chiemsee is a freshwater lake and is one one the jewels in the crown of Bavaria Tourism, but visitors there could be forgiven for thinking they are at the seaside. Tourists are catered for with hotels and restaurants and it is worth trying the local specialities, Bratwurst and Apfelstrudel, washed down with Weissbier.

On the lake are several islands. On the Herrenchiemsee island is a palace built by King Ludwig ll of Bavaria in the late 19th century and tourists can be ferried out there for visits.

To get the most authentic Bavarian experience the tourist is highly recommended to sample the delights of the Romantic Road which has wonderful scenary and beautiful towns like Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the little known Dinkelsbuhl.

While the Bavarian countryside is a delightful backdrop for holidays in Bavaria the regions towns and cities also have their own fascination. Nurnberg City has a strong mediaeval history and also played a key role in the Nazi era and its aftermath.

Munich may be a modern thriving city, but it has many fine historical buildings and monuments and is very much the cultural centre for the region with many amazing museums. The city should most certainly be visited for those enjoying their Bavarian holidays.

Of course there is so much to see and do here that it can be difficult to work out where you are going to start and what you want to see.

To help we have put together our personal top ten places to visit which you will hopefully find useful. To see our top ten visit our Bavaria vacation page.
