Bavarian Ski Resorts

Bavarian ski resorts are among the best in Europe and cater for all winter sports enthusiasts whatever their level.

Probably the most famous resort is Garmisch-Pertenkirchen which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1936 and is still a regular World Cup venue.

There are ambitions to bring the Olympics back and the area also hosts an annual ski jumping competition on New Years Day.

As a resort for skiers and snowboarders Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers great slopes and with the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in the Bavarian Alps, plenty of excitement for daredevils!

There are many different places to enjoy winter sports in this region and you can see much more information on our Skiing in Bavaria page.

More Great Places For Skiers To Visit

Schwangau is also very popular with skiers and is a beautiful part of the world. A well as being one of the best Bavarian ski resorts Schwangau also has other major attractions, namely the castles at Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.

Dominating Schwangau is the Tegelburg Mountain. The mountain is over 1,700m high and boasts a 7km downhill piste. For the cross country skier there is 30km of trails. There is also 50km of walking trails during the winter as well as a separate tobogganing run.

There is a floodlit skiing at night on the Neuschwanstein cross country skiing track which is 2 km long. The area is serviced by a cable car and four ski lifts.

For those wanting to learn to ski, or improve their skiing skills there is a skiing school as well as the ability to rent skis and snowboards.

Just a short drive from Schwangau is Alpspitz at an altitude of 1,575m. It is ideal for skiiers of all abilities – advanced, beginners as well as for families. It also has a 2km long piste which is floodlit. There is also separate area for toboggans. Après-ski features include ski huts.

Another popular Bavarian ski resort is Brotjacklriegel-Sonnenwald. There is 2.2km of what is labelled as easy ski slopes and 2km medium. The resort has three ski schools and a park for children. There is also plenty of accommodation in the area with a mixture of hotels, accommodation and bed and breakfast.

There is skiing at Eck for a wide range of abilities – difficult, medium and easy. It has a lodge and après-ski bar as well as facilities for snowboarding. The piste is served by two lifts.

Although Franconia does not have huge mountains it still enjoys great winter sports. The Fichtel Mountain is the most popular and produces the best skiing with its peaks of over 1200 meters. The Rhon mountains offer lots of slopes though the highest mountain in the region, the Wasserkuppe (950 meters) is actually in the neighbouring state of Hesse.

Elsewhere in Bavaria the Allgau has an incredible 200 miles of slopes and enthusiasts of all abilities will find something to suit them. There some great cross country runs here and terrific alpine skiing.
