Christmas in Bavaria

Anyone looking for a traditional, authentic and fun winter break should think about Christmas in Bavaria.

Bavaria is traditionally strongly Roman Catholic and this is reflected in the way the region celebrates Christmas.

With the snow-topped Bavarian Alps providing the perfect backdrop this part of Germany is the ideal Yuletide setting. And this helps make the region a perfect place to visit during the Christmas period.

Bavaria is famed for its Christmas markets, a delight for locals and visitors alike. There is a delightful one in Wurzburg, northern Bavaria. During the Christmas period there are nativity plays in the Oberer Market. These are a real treat for the children.

However, most people tend to visit Wurzburg’s Christmas markets for more “traditional” reasons such as buying gifts and enjoying a bite to eat at one of the many stalls.

While in Bavaria during the Christmas period another market to visit is the one at Nurnberg (below). It dates back to the 16th century and is dubbed “the little town of wood and cloth.”

It is one of most famous Christmas markets in Germany and boasts upwards of 200 stalls. And while there it is well worth tasting the spiced gingerbread as it is a real treat.

On the Romantic Road in Germany the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber hosts a wonderful Christmas market which is regarded as one of the best in the whole of Germany. And, if you do get a chance to visit this lovely town, the famous Christmas Shop, which is open all year round, has everything you could possibly need for the festive period.

Christmas, is not, or at least should not be about commerce and buying things. So to help celebrate the Yuletide spirit while in Bavaria a visit to the Christmas Museum in Rothenburg is in order.

Of course the state capital also a marvellous place to visit and the Munich Christmas Market is rightly famed throughout Europe for its atmosphere and many wonderful stalls food, gifts and crafts.

Christmas In Bavaria - A Touch Of The Bizarre

Bavaria, at least to the outsider, has some bizarre Christmas traditions. In the Berchtesgardner Land there are gun salutes on the first and fourth Sunday in Advent. Also in the Berchtesgadener Land men dressed in straw, wearing fur masks and with cow bells hanging from their belts take part in the Buttnmandl run.

Bavarians also like carol singing, but with a nice twist. On Klopfenachte, the three Thursdays before Christmas Day, children dressed as shepherds knock on doors and sing carols and collect donations for charities.
