Common German Food
What is it about all of the different kinds of common German food? Although at times heavier fare, the food is always delicious, hearty and flavorful. Meets, potatoes, noodles and of courses cheeses make up a lot of what is considered to be common types of food in Bavaria and Germany.Waking up in the morning in Germany for most means a delicious breakfast awaits. Slices of deli meats like ham, salami and sausages of all different varieties commonly are found at the breakfast table. Another food that you will most likely see for breakfast in Germany is cheese. Swiss, ilsiter, munster, gruyere, or one of the other common German cheeses will be in slices similar to the deli meat and also available for breakfast. My favorite (ok one of my favorite) foods for breakfast is bread. Brotchen, a hard roll is most likely to be served and/or some other type of bread with seeds like sesame or caraway. There is usually honey available as well as butter to top off the bread with. Honestly, I don't know how Germans can be hungry by the time lunch rolls around, the fabulous spreads at breakfast provide a great balance of protein, carbs, and taste!
Typically, either the lunch or the dinner in Germany is a lighter meal, and the other a heavier. Traditionally, the heavier meal was eaten at lunch time, and the dinner meal consisted of a smaller meal such as bread and meat. In the last decade or so, this tradition has shifted somewhat and switched to a pattern of eating more similar to that of the United States, lunch being a lighter meal with a heavier one to be had in the evening. There are some very yummy and interesting foods to be had for lunch/dinner in Germany. From spaetzle to bratwurst there is always a good meal to be had in Germany.
