Famous German Food

Famous German food is Synonymous with Bavaria.

The hearty dishes you find in Germany and especially Bavaria are hard to beat.

Common German foods such as Schnitzel, spaetzle, beef with gravy and the list goes on and on, are part of what makes Bavaria the special place that it is.

There is so much to pick from when choosing German foods. So, what are the most famous German foods?

SWEETS

  • Baumkuchen - in German "tree cake" this is a layer cake dubbed as "King of Cakes"
  • Rote Grutze - Served with ice cream or regular cream, a raspberry puree
  • Schwarzwalter Kirschtorte - Served with cherries and cream, a wonderful chocolate layer cake
  • Marzipan - A type of paste-frosting used to mold into shapes and tastes like almond and sugar
  • Stollen - Christmas cake

Main Dishes

  • Hasenpfeffer - A dish made with rabbit or hare and peppered
  • Himmel und Erde - Blood sausage, potatoes and apples
  • Gansebraten - A roasted goose with apples and prunes stuffed inside
  • Kalbshaxe - A veal shank
  • Weiner Schnitzel - A breaded cutlet of veal pan fried
  • Schweinsbraten - Pork shoulder cooked with dumplbings and sauerkraut and homeade sauce
  • Spanferkel - Feast of a pig (or a feast made with pig)
  • Sauerbraten - Pot roast with potato dumplings, fruit, cabbage and a sweet and sour sauce
  • Maultaschen - Pasta stuffed with spinach and a minced meat, looks like ravioli
  • Labskaus - Similar to hash, with potatoes, beats, onion, meat or fish with a fried egg on top
  • Kasseler Rippchen - Pork loin that has been smoked

Soups and Side Dishes

  • Kartoffelsalat - A German potato salad made with oil and vinegar
  • Bratkartolfen - Onions and bacon mixed with fried potatoes
  • Sauerkraut - Literally meaning "Sour Cabbage" cabbage is pickled and served warm
  • Spaetzle - Small dumplings or noodles cooked in boiling water
  • Reibekuchen - Served with apple sauce, this is a potato pancake pan fried
  • Aalsuppe - Soup sometimes served with eel that is mainly vegetables and fruit
  • Grune Sosse - Sauce made out of herbs and is green

Cheese

  • Munster - This mild cheese is originally from France, but very famous in Germany also
  • Tilsiter - A creamy yet firm yellow cheese
  • Limburger - A native of Belgium, a very strong smelling and strong tasting cheese found in Germany
  • Gruyere- A yellow hard cheese, made in Switzerland, but used in a log of German foods

Sausages

  • Bratwurst - Made out of pork the Bratwurst means "roast sausage" and can sometimes be spicy.
  • Kackwurst - This wurst is made from veal, pork, and garlic and smoked
  • Bockwurst - With a mild spice, this wurst is made with milk,veal and pork
  • Bauernwurst - A pork sausage called the "Farmer's Sausage"
  • Blutwurst - Cut up pork mixed with breadcrumbs and blood, known in the U.S. as a "Blood Sausage"
  • Weisswurst - A mild sausage with a light color and made with veal
