Franconia Germany

Franconia Germany is more or less the geographical centre of the country and the largest region of Bavaria.

The people of the region are traditionally very independent and indeed it wasn't until the eighteenth century that Franconia officially became part of Bavaria.

The capital of Franconia, and the second largest city in Bavaria behind Munich, is Nurnberg (Nuremberg). It is fair to say that Nurnberg's glory days were way back in medieval times when the free city was at the heart of European trade routes, but nevertheless the city has lots to offer the tourists who flock there in large numbers.

Nurnberg Germany was of course the focus of huge Nazi rallies and the war trials that followed the ending of the Second World War. Much of the city itself was destroyed by allied bombs but many buildings were rebuilt exactly as they were before the war.

Franconia Germany - Places To Visit

Beyreuth on the old border with East Germany enjoys worldwide fame because of its Wagner festival held every since 1876. Wagner had chosen the town to be his base and built a theatre to stage his operas and the festival now attracts over 50000 visitors to the town.

But there is more to Beyreuth than 'just' Wagner the wonderful architecture and museums make the town a delightful place to visit.

Not far from Beyreuth is the Fichtelgebirge or Spruce Mountains. This really is a beautiful part of Bavaria which meanders all the way into the Bohemian Forest of the old Czechoslovakia.

Possibly the most attractive feature of the Fichtelgebirge, apart from the scenery, is that many tourists have yet to discover its charm and it is well off the beaten track.

Bavaria is of course well known for its beer and the town of Kulmbach brews more than anywhere else including Kulminator 28 which is reputably the worlds strongest ale. Its inhabitants also manage to drink more than anyone else!

Ramblers and hikers will enjoy tramping through Kronach And The Franconian Forest, or Frankenwald, with its unspoilt beauty and flowing waterways.

Bamberg is a university town that is largely ignored by tourist. This is strange as the town has some magnificent architecture and is picture box Bavarian.

With its vibrant town life and magnificent Bamberg Cathedral it is a great place to visit.

And, if you are visiting this part of the world, then make sure Franconian Switzerland is on your itinerary. Another lovely spot for hiking Franconian Switzerland is the area between Nurnberg, Bamberg and Beyreuth and is well worth a visit.

So too is the slow paced Altmuhl Valley where a boat trip up the river is highly recommended.
