Fussen Germany

Fussen Germany is nestled in the Bavarian Alps and is the southern most point of the Romantic Road.

Less than two miles from the Austrian border the town is typically easy on the eye and a nice place to walk round on a sunny summers day.

It is probably fair to say that Fussen is often seem more as a starting point for those who want to travel the Romantic Road in Germany or visit the wonderful castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau (below) that were built by King Ludwig ll of Bavaria.

Surrounded by rolling hills, high mountains, glittering lakes and a stunning landscape It is no surprise that the town is described as the romantic soul of Bavaria. A traditional German town where the Bavarian culture is alive and well Fussen is a lovely place to visit in its own right and not just as a gateway to other attractions.

That being said Fussen is also a great base from which to explore the surrounding Allgau region or to head north along the Romantic Road to the towns of Augsburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber or even to the beginning of the trail in Wurzburg.

Fussen Germany And The Allgau

Fussen is the best place from which to discover the magic of the Allgau. And the best way to do that is from the water.

The Forggensee is one of the largest lakes in Bavaria and a great way to explore it is on one of the regular scheduled trips ran by the Fussen Shipping Company. The companies passenger boats run trips of varying lengths from one to two hours in duration allowing the tourist to enjoy incredible views of the Alps and the wonderland castles.

Fussen

In itself the town of Fussen is a lovely place to visit. Typically Bavarian with its wonderful architecture, meandering streets and charming shops the tourist should enjoy a delightful stroll. And, of course, there are lots of eateries and beer gardens to relax in.

One of the most interesting places to visit in the town is the St Mang Monastery and Bascilica. The Fussen Heritage Museum can be found in the baroque building which dates all the way back to the eight century.

St Meng is also the venue for the traditional Christmas Market that is held in the town over four days in December.

Another must visit building is Hohes Schloss or High Palace. Former residence of the Prince Bishops before they decamped to the Wurzburg Residenz the Palace is a wonderful example of gothic architecture and home to an extensive art collection.
