Garmisch-Pertenkirchen - The Bavarian Alps
Garmisch-Pertenkirchen justifiably claims to be the number one ski resort in the Bavarian Alps.Situated in the stunning Wetterstein mountain range that extends into the Austrian Tyrol and is home to the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, the two villages are home to many winter sports including skiing, skating and tobogganing. The area hosted the 1936 winter olympics and is still a world cup venue to adrenaline junkies will find everything here they need including the Zugspitze and Kreuzeck-Hausberg black piste's. Though skiers of all levels will find slopes to suit them here. But Garmisch-Pertenkirchen isn't just for winter sports enthusiasts. Hikers, walkers and tourists love the mountains. Something you must do if you visit the area is to go to the summit of the 3000 metre high Zugspitze. To get there take the electric railway (Zugspitzbahn) from Garmisch to Eibsee. Once at Eibsee you have the choice of taking the awe inspiring, and slightly terrifying, Eibseebahn cable car or the less stomach churning but still spectacular rack railway. Once the railway reaches the Hotel Schneeferhaus transfer to the Gipfelbahn cable car for the rest of the journey. Another cable car journey well worth taking is from Garmisch to the unfortunately named Wank. This is incredibly popular with visitors from the UK though the stunning views from Wank make the trip a must do for everyone. For hikers there are some spectacular routes through the Wetterstein mountains and the local tourist information offices will be able to provide maps.
