German Food, Cuisine, Fare, Dish… Whatever it’s called – it’s GOOD!

When thinking about famous German food, are you thinking about bratwurst? Perhaps pretzels and beer are what comes to mind when you are thinking about the find cuisine found here. Whatever your preconceived ideas about food in Germany is – you’re right. AND so wrong!

beer and wieners are only the tip of the iceberg for choices of cuisine in Germany. Soups, Salads, pretzels, rolls – find them all in Bavaria. Stews, casseroles, schnitzel. You bet! If you love to eat then you will love German food and all it has to offer!

The main meat type ingredients and dishes that make up German food are poultry, beef, and pork. Chicken, turkey, and game type meats that Germans cook with include venison and rabbit. Many times the meats a fried in a pan and then served with spaetzle (spaetzle is one of my favorite German Foods, so click on this link to see my whole page devoted to it’s wonderfulness!) Or potatoes(pommes). Now it is time for the wurst part about Deutschland cuisine. Many, if not all of the meats eaten can be and are made into sausages and wursts. Even though in the United States we think of sausages as maybe being a little spicy or hot, that is not necessarily the case in Germany. You can find sausages of all types from the really spicy to mild but with a good flavor in the seasoning.

Trout is big here especially when you order at a restaurant. Other fish you find are herring, pike, carp and perch. It is a treat when you stumble into a restaurant and are able to order the fish of the day, caught by the owners of the restaurant and fresh that day!

We can’t forget about the national dishes of Germany! And there are more than one!

Sauerbraten
Schwarzwalder
Brezel
Currywurst
Spaetzle
Sauerkraut
Beer

All national dishes. So much to choose from!

Ok vegetarians, they do have vegetables too. I am sorry I have to admit that when I go, vegetables are not something that I study. But they do have them, and you can get a lot of them in the stews and soups that are exquisite there. Asparagus, or spargel is often found as a side dish. As mentioned earlier, potatoes are a big vegetable here as well.

German Food includes many types of noodles and pastas. Of course I did already mention my favorite, spaetzle. Another common dough food are stuffed noodles that are kind of like ravioli, they call them maultaschen. Dumplings are also served a lot, usually as a side dish.

If you are in the mood for French fries, please don’t just head over to the McDonald’s! Don’t get me wrong I love McDonald’s, it certainly has it’s place. But fries in Germany, which are called pommes are really good and are usually served with ketchup, just like you are used to. They are similar to what we would call Danish fries. Sometimes they are served to you with mayonnaise as well, yummy.

You probably can’t help but think of schnitzel when thinking of German Food. Maybe a little tune that involves noodles comes to mind? Be warned, someday I will add a link here to download me singing it. But anyway, schnitzel is a meat and noodle dish. There are a ton of ways to make schnitzel.

Ok, I will get to the good stuff HEAD CHEESE. No, it isn’t cheese, and yes it smells kind of gross. BUT it really isn’t that bad.

Believe me when I say that it is hard to beat a lazy afternoon at the deli drinking a strong cup of coffee and having dessert. German Coffee I find to be very good, especially with a yummy dessert. The coffee here is a bit stronger than what we might be used to in the U.S., but it is served in much smaller cups as well! Add a little cream and sugar, and you will love it!

The desserts are heavenly here as well. I don’t think I could do them justice sandwiching them between coffee and bread. I think desserts deserve their own page, don’t you?

One thing I never counted on when I visited Germany was liking the bread so much. Bread is big with locals, and is served with every meal of the day. You can find bakeries in every small town or big city. Pumpernickel, rye, wheat, honey, pumpkin – the list goes on and on. The bread here is great and so fresh. German people believe that it is very important to have bread in ones diet, and they do a great job of making it yummy!

Planning the food on your trip to Germany……..

If you are planning to visit Germany, then you are going to have to figure out how you are going to feed yourself. Plus, reading tons of info on Germany in your guide books and online, you are already going to have an idea of all the things you want to try.

I think that it is important to try all kinds of new things when you go on a trip. German food has a lot to offer, hearty and sometimes healthy, there is something for even the pickiest eater in Germany!
