Hofbrauhaus

What is the Hofbrauhaus? The Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München (state court-brewery in Munich, also Hofbräu München) is a must for anyone looking for the traditional Bavarian beer garden experience! For years people have been going to this historical former brewery in Munich to get a taste of what a true beer garden and beer hall experience is like. Dating back to the late 1500's, the Hofbräu München as served up home brewed beer for centuries and continues to delight the visitors that come by the hundred's of thousands every year.

The Hofbrauhaus was built in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V. of Bavaria. The duke lived in Munich at the time but was unhappy with the choices of beer that he had locally. He wanted a brown beer and imported his beer from Swabia. At some point before 1589, someone brought to the Duke's attention that he could brew his own beer, to his taste thus avoiding the hassle of importing it. Well, this idea caught on fast and soon the Duke was making his own beer.

Die Schwemme

Munich's Hofbrauhaus contains several different sections and is a very large place. Die Schwemme is the place where all of the beer was brewed. Located on the first floor, there is enough room for over 1,300 people to sit! This area also houses the bar and podium. You can find wonderful live music playing at the Hofbräu München every night of the week.

A Unique touch of the Hofbräu München is the stein safes that they have. Here locals can secure their prized beer steins and beer mugs so that the tourists can't take off with them - make sense to me! It really is a testament to a place like the Hofbrauhaus that they can still maintain such a strong local following along with the tourist crowd.

The Beer Garden

Outside of the Hofbräu München is where you will find the beer garden. Locals and tourists find this a most enjoyable way to spend their time in Bavaria! Good beer, friendly faces, and food surround visitors and give them the most out of a true Bavarian experience. Chestnut trees provide a little shade for the almost 400 visitors that can be accommodated in the beer garden.

The Festival Hall

Now if you want a traditional beer hall this is it! The Festival Hall at the Hofbrauhaus seats close to 900 people and delivers exciting entertainment every night of the week. Dancers, singers, alphorn players, and yodelers delight visitors and over deliver a true Bavarian experience.

Built in 1589 and rebuilt in 1958 after WWII, the hall features dynamic architecture. Massive vaulted ceilings add to the ambiance of the beer hall, as do Bavaria warm glow over the entire hall.

The Bräustüberl

The Bräustüberl is the restaurant portion of the Hofbrauhaus. If you aren't ready for a huge beer hall experience, but want to try a lighter meal and a great beer, this is the place to go. It offers the Bavarian touch without all the bells and whistles. Wood booths and furniture along with bay windows and hearty meals makes this a great stop on anyone's agenda.
