Landshut Germany

Landshut Germany is a busy little town in Lower or Eastern Bavaria that is well worth a visit for anyone enjoying a holiday or tour of Bavaria.

Only around 44 miles from Munich the town is very accessible and is easily reached in an hour by train from Regensburg.

Landshut is quite often viewed as a very convenient stop off point for those who are on their way to the Bavarian Forest or the city of Passau but it really is a lovely place to visit in its own right.

Landshut Germany - A Little Bit Of History

Landshut is built on the River Isar and was more or lress founded by King Ludwig I who built a settlement in the shadow of the Landshut castle, which is now known as the Burg Trausnitz.

The town was seriously wealthy during the 14th and 15th Centuries and the local branch of the House Of Wittelsbach weren't shy about throwing their money around.

This extravagance cumulated in a huge celebration when the Duke of Bavaria's son, George the Rich, married the King of Poland's daughter, Princess Hedwig, in 1475, in front of over 10,000 guests.

This bash was the ultimate medieval blow out and the incredible richness of the event is still celebrated today.

The Landshut Wedding

George and Hedwig's marriage is celebrated today and is why the town is famous throughout the world.

Every four years the townsfolk celebrate the Landshut Wedding and the Landshuter Hochzeit is now one of the biggest medieval pageants in Europe.

For four weeks the incredible celebrations of that long ago marriage are recreated with events, processions and tournaments all taking place with many of the participants in period costume.

The event attracts thousands of visitors to the town and is a wonderful occasion. Read more about this great event on our Landshut Wedding page.

Burg Trausnitz

The original Landshut castle was expanded over the centuries and is now a massive structure that incorporates Romanesque, Gothic and even Renaissance styles of architecture.

The Burg Trausnitz towers over the town and is a 'must visit' attraction for tourists.

It is a steep but rewarding climb up to the castle though many will undoubtedly prefer the easier option of getting one of the regular buses from the Altstadt (the centre of town).

Whichever method is used to get to the castle the views over the town are wonderful and those that enjoy their architecture will love exploring the well preserved buildings and walls. The garden too is a great place to enjoy a scenic stroll.

The Altstadt

The Altstadt is the medieval centre of Landshut Germany and the tourist will spend many enjoyable hours exploring its charms.

My favourite activity in any Bavarian town or city is to enjoy walking around the narrow alleys and thoroughfares, looking through the traditional shops and enjoying the cafes and bars. The Altstadt in Landshut doesn't disappoint on any of these fronts.

There are also plenty of other things to see here and don't miss the Gothic church of St Martin and its amazing brick built steeple. At over 130 metres in height it is the tallest brick built structure in the world. Inside too the church is a delight and look out for the Rosenkranz Madonna - a beautiful 16th century woodcarving.

The main feature of the Altstadt is the wonderfully preserved houses with their coloured facades but don't miss out on visiting the Stadtresidenz a 16th century palace that houses its own museums.
