Mittenwald - The Bavarian Alps
The small town of Mittenwald is well worth a visit If you are looking for a less touristy destination in the Bavarian Alps. Around 20 km from the ski resort of Garmisch-Pertenkirchen this small town has a lovely traditional slow pace about it. The houses in the town feature the wonderful Alpine Luftlmalerei, brightly painted frescoes, on a par with the ones found in Oberammergau and it is a real pleasure just strolling though the tight streets and taking in the pretty houses. The town is world famous for the highly coveted violins made in the town. In the mid 18th century instruments made in the town were highly prized amongst musicians. The violin tradition is still strong in the town with around a dozen workshops producing then instruments. The history of violin making in the town is celebrated with the Geigenbaumuseum (Museum of Violin Making) which is in Ballenhausgasse. The town is also home to the Geigenbauschule (Violin Making School). Students from Europe and even further afield attend the school to learn their craft. No visit to the town would be complete without a trip to the Karwendl mountain. At 2385 meters the Karwendl isn't quite as high as the Zugspitze at Garmisch-Pertenkirchen but the views from the top are quite spectacular. Taking a cable car to the top of the mountain is a real treat for any tourist. With its quaint houses and traditional Alpine atmosphere Mittenwald should be on the itinerary of anyone who visits this part of the Bavarian Alps.
