Munich Museums

There are nearly 100 Munich museums to visit in the city so if you are looking for things to do in Munich then you really are spoilt for choice.

From old masters to modern art, from classical Greek style buildings to Roman sculpture from the amazing and monumental Munich Residenz to the Bavarian National Museum.

There really is something for everyone is this beautiful city of culture.

But with nearly 100 museums to choose from where on earth do you start?

Elsewhere on this site you can see a full list of the best museums in Munich but here I have picked out my six favourites which I believe will give you a wonderful experience and which presents a diverse selection to suit most tastes.

Deutsches Museum Munich

Our top six recommended Munich Museums are (where applicable click on the name of the museum for more in-depth information).

Deutches Museum

This museum, pictured above, is simply amazing. The largest scientific and technical museum in the world and the interactive exhibits here will be enjoyed by everyone.

Bavarian BMW Museum

One of Bavaria’s greatest exports, BMW cars, are loved around the world. This museum should be on the must visit list of anyone with the remotest interest in the automobile and luxury German cars.

Munich Residenz

Please don't miss this amazing museum of your itinerary. The Residenz is an absolute must see. The seat of Bavarian government and home to the House Of Wittelsbach this huge complex houses many different museums, collections and beautiful gardens. You can find the entrance to the Residenz on Max-Joseph-Platz.

Cuvillies-Theater

Although the original building was destroyed towards the Second World War many of the fittings and carvings were saved. These were later re-housed in a new building near the Apothekenhof (Apothecary Court) in the Residenz. The beautiful wood carvings have to be seen to be believed and the building as awhile is an incredible example of Bavarian Rococo design.

Museum Brandhorst

If you enjoy modern art than this is the place for you. The building itself is stunning. The facade of the building is constructed from 36000 coloured ceramic rods and in side you will find the very best examples of modern art including pieces by Andy Warhol and Damian Hirst.

Bavarian National Museum

A fantastic collection of art, furniture and clothes dating right back to the middle ages this museum captures the history of the Bavarian culture. The museum houses an incredible collection of beautiful nativity scenes gathered from around Europe.
