Nordlingen Germany

Nordlingen Germany is a great stop off point for any tourist to Bavaria who is travelling the Romantic Road.

Nordlingen im Ries, to give the town its formal title, is located in a lush basin surrounded by high hills.

Known as 'Germany's Breadbasket' this fertile area was formed by a giant asteroid smashing into the earth and making a crater around 1500 meters deep.

Walking The Walls

A 'must do' activity for any tourist to Nordlingen im Ries is to walk the city walls.

Access to the walls is via the Riemlinger Tor gateway and there is around 2 miles of the ramparts that are still standing and they provide an invigorating and very scenic walk.

But, if it is stunning eagle eye views you are looking for, then the Georgskirche is the place for you. The parish church is home to a massive alter but also the 90 meters high Daniel Steeple (below).

The steeple can be climbed to provide breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding villages but be warned - it is 365 steps to the top. Not for the faint hearted!

In days gone by the Daniel served as the towns watchtower and played a major role when Nordlingen im Ries was twice besieged during the Thirty Years War in the 17th century.

Nordlingen Germany - Beer, Pageantry And Horses

As well as the towns typically beautiful Bavarian architecture Nordlingen im Ries stages some wonderfully exotic pageants and festivals.

A particular favourite is the Historisches Stadtmaurerfest. Only staged every three years this wonderful pageant sees many of the locals garbed in traditional dress and craft markets aplenty.

Slightly more frequent is the bi-annual Scharlachrennen; a horse race first held in 1438. Nowadays there are athletic events as well as the horse race to keep visitors and locals entertained.

Annual events held in the town include Stabenfest which is centuries old festival for children. A procession by ornately clad children winds its way through the town cumulating in a festival held beyond the city's walls.

Beer drinkers who enjoy Octoberfest in Munich will appreciate the smaller but nevertheless intense two week folk music and beer festival of Nordlinger Pfingstmesse held in mid June.
