Obersalzburg In The Bavarian Alps
Obersalzburg is known by many as the Bavarian Alps retreat of Adolf Hitler but this beautiful part of the world has so much more to offer than just Nazi tourism. That being said don't miss a trip up the Kehlstein mountain. The Kehlstein is the site of Hitler's Eagles Nest and nowadays is a restaurant ran by a charitable trust but the mountain itself gives some breathtaking views. During the months of May through to October special buses run from Obersalzburg to the mountain. The buses travel up a wonderfully scenic road that winds itself up the mountain before passengers disembark and travel the last 100 meters in a lift inside the mountain itself. Although at 1834 meters the Kehlstein isn't as big as other German mountains the view from the summit are incredible with tourists being able to see as far as the Austrian city of Salzburg on a clear day. For those interested in hiking up the mountain it will take around two hours to reach the summit. Other places of interest nearby include the rest of the Berchtesgadener Land national park and some wonderful examples of German woodcarving can be seen in the market town of Berchtesgadener.
